"IMAGINE ME!"

This issue (February 2007 - Sacculturalhub.com Urban Entertainment Newspaper - pick it up now at these locations) is a milestone as I so imagined this chance and this opportunity. We have been able to capturePleshette Robertson, CEO & Founder - Sacculturalhub.com some very powerful interviews with Black Men in Leadership Who Are Succeeding in Their Careers. Never before have I had male friends like I have now.  My life has been incredible and exciting with the wonderful people I have come to know through Sacculturalhub.com. I feel so very blessed to know so many different Black men (check out the profiles in this issue which included over 20 men that we interviewed):

  • Black men who are doing things!

  • Black men who are decision-makers!

  • Black men who own homes!

  • Black men who understand our society!

  • Black men who are educated!

  • Black men who own and run their business!

  • Black men who cherish and love their mothers and grandmothers!

  • Black men who take care of family!

  • Black men who work hard!

  • Black men who seek opportunity!

  • Black men who are investors!

  • Black men who have a great sense of humor!

  • Black men who work in the community!

  • Black men who set standards!

  • Black men who are mentors!

  • Black men who undoubtedly love the Lord!

  • Black men with a purpose and on a positive mission!

  • Black men who are handsome and good looking!

One might as, “well why aren’t there any profiles on ministers and politicians?” (but it is coming soon in a future issue of our newspaper).  Well, I’m a person that’s always wanting to go underground and Sacculturalhub.com is well known for recognizing the underdogs—those who either remain behind the scenes or for some reason don’t get recognized and receive their due accolades for their achievements. We chose to recognize just a handful of Black men who stand for the complete package when it comes to fatherhood, community and leadership.  Next year we will ask our Hub fans to submit nominations for Black men in leadership.

Kirk Franklin’s “Imagine Me” is one of my favorite songs. Whenever I hear this song, I get so elated and feel like I can overcome just about anything in life – especially the impossibilities. And, that’s where that good ole’ faith time religion comes in where you rely totally on the almighty God. And, you basically turn all of your burdens over to Him. You ask Jesus to place you where you should be. You ask Him to reveal your purpose.  Then you IMAGINE the impossible and watch for God to perform his miracles in your life.

In 1999 I imagined and hoped that my family—my sister and I— would buy a home and live close to each other and also have my mom live close by.  Before moving to Sacramento in March 2001, I was renting in Sunnyvale, my mom lived in our family home in East Palo Alto and my sister was renting in San Francisco. In the winter of 2000 I came to Sacramento looking for a home to buy because I knew after visiting and talking with my uncle (who had been living here for over 10 years) it would be the only place left in California where I could afford to purchase a home on a single family income. Back then I was hoping desperately to find something within my price range. I was so scared at first and so afraid of leaving my job of 14 years at Stanford University. My sister and I were so very close and I hated the thought of moving to Sacramento with my daughters without my sister and mom.

In February 2001 I did find and buy my home in South Sacramento—and my sister came with me. There we were the seven of us, including five kids, in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house. Our home was a mad house that never slept. My house was actually bigger than the 800 sq. ft. home that my sister and I grew up in as we are a family of five.  My sister and I gradually settled into Sacramento not knowing who from where to what to do here. She actually found a job before me the third day we moved here at Another Look Beauty and Barber Salon. I started working a temp job at Methodist Hospital in the emergency room on the graveyard shift (I hated it – that was so hard). I started working another temp position at UC Davis Medical Center and within one month became a permanent full-time employee.

During the last five years while working at UC Davis, Sacculturalhub.com hatched … starting as a four-page newsletter in November 2001, then transforming into a web site, which launched in March 2002. After several years of hard work and perseverance we were able to burst on the scene with the Sacculturalhub.com Urban Entertainment Newspaper in February 2006.  I ate, slept and drank the idea of Sacculturalhub.com becoming an actual print publication.  So much happened for me; my mom (who moved here six months after I did) and my sister here in Sac that opened multiple doors of opportunities and chances that we never had or experienced before moving to Sac.  I would always say to my sister when we first moved here it feels like the “land of milk and honey.”  I feel so free here like I can make stuff happen and people listen. People did and do listen and I so love Sacramento, the Hub fans and all of the people we’ve come to know who have contributed to the making of Sacculturalhub.com.  Without and audience, you have nothing!

So “Imagine Me” now is a milestone in my life.  “Imagine” is one of my favorite words and now I actually have an IMAGINE stand (that my sister bought for me) on my desk in my home office.  It’s so fun for me to sometimes daydream (I actually daydream too much or just get lost in thought often) about new projects and new themes/topics to write about for the newspaper. That’s why I’m so ecstatic about the Black men who stand CENTERSTAGE in this issue.  These are terrific role models and mentors who should and must be seen in a front cover format. Our young people, especially adolescent males, must know that there are Black men doing positive things and living productive lives.  And, what better to grandstand them in our special edition issue dedicated to Black history month.
