When Carl Davis Jr., president of Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce (SVBCC), sat down with Helen Norman, Health Care consultant, to talk about Covered California, there was no doubt that the Black Chamber was a likely candidate to become a Certified Enrollment Entity (CEE) for the Covered California Health Insurance Marketplace. The SVBCC is now a Certified Enrollment Entity, authorized to educate individuals about affordable care in California, and enroll them in Covered California health insurance plans.
SAN JOSE, CA: In keeping with the Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce (SVBCC) mission of empowerment and collaboration, Davis and Norman recognized the value of partnering with other organizations in the Valley that are strong advocates for quality health care. Thus, the SVBCC, San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP and the Community Health Partnership (CHP) collaborated to host a “Covered California Town Hall” meeting to assist local citizens to learn about the Affordable Care Act (ACA)-commonly referred to as “Obamacare”-and make application through Covered California, the marketplace that connects Californians to accessible, high-quality health coverage. The event entitled, “Can We Talk?” Covered California will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the Santa Clara County Government Center, downtown San Jose.
Congressional leaders, elected officials from the City of San Jose and the California State Assembly will participate in the town hall meeting. Assemblymember Nora Campos, Speaker pro Tempore, California State Assembly will host the program. Event sponsors include County Supervisor Dave Cortese, Santa Clara County Social Services Agency and the African American Municipal Employees Association of the City of San Jose. Consumers, representatives from community organizations, and stakeholders are invited to come to this special forum-that is supported by community and business leaders-to join the conversation about health reform and affordable care in California.

The Silicon Valley/Santa Clara County Black Chamber of Commerce (SVBCC) was incorporated as a 501(c)6 in 1988 by founding president and local business person Ron McPherson. He served as its president for ten years. In 2000, the Chamber created a 501(c)3, The Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurial Development, to act as a foundation for its educational projects and its Incubator Program.
The chamber’s mission is to economically empower and develop the African American, as well as underserved communities.
