“Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art”
September 21 through January 11, 2015
Drawn from the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the exhibition explores the idea that we are “a nation of immigrants” by considering the varied contributions of Latino artists to American art and culture from the mid-20th century to the present. Featuring nearly 100 works in all media by some of the leading contemporary artists working in the United States, the exhibition will examine how their works express an evolving and particular American experience. Latino artists across the United States were galvanized by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. They created new images of their communities and celebrated hybrid cultural traditions. Approaching their practice with humor, irony, and valor, Latino artists critically probed American history and popular culture, revealing the possibilities and tensions of expansionism, migration, and settlement.
“The Provoke Era: Japanese Photography from the Collection of SFMOMA”
October 12 through February 1, 2015
The tumultuous period following World War II provided fertile ground for a generation of Japanese photographers who responded to societal upheaval by creating a new visual language dubbed “are, bure, boke” — rough, blurred, and out of focus. Named for the magazine “Provoke,” which sought to break the rules of traditional photography, this exhibition traces how Japanese photographers responded to their country’s shifting social and political atmosphere. Showcasing photographers like Masahisa Fukase, Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama, and Shomei Tomatsu, the works presented all come from the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which holds one of the preeminent collections of Japanese photography in the United States. Organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the presentation of this exhibition is made possible by a grant from The James Irvine Foundation.
“Arte Mexicano: Legacy of the Masters”
October 12 through February 1, 2015
This exhibition showcases the ideals, individualism, and intertwining artistic lives of 20th-century Mexican artists. Composed of 40 paintings by more than 35 artists, the exhibition highlights their varied responses to the post-revolutionary call for a distinctly Mexican visual art. The social realism of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siquerios, and the subjective and associative subjects of Rufino Tamayo, Maria Izquierdo, Remedios Varo, and Francisco Toledo are explored. Mexico’s importance as a crucible of modernist ideas—one that attracted artists from Europe and the United States—is traced alongside the inspiration drawn from the nation’s ancient civilizations. The mid-century abstraction of Gunther Gerzo and Carlos Merida, and of contemporary painters such as Mario Palacios brings the story to the present, as does the expressionism of Alejandro Santiago and Irma Palacios.

“American River College Fine Arts Club Annual Art Exhibit”

Join us for an annual celebration of artwork created by members of the American River College (ARC) Fine Arts Club. The ARC Fine Arts Club was established in 2007 with the primary mission to create an atmosphere of artistic community on the ARC campus and to provide alternate public venues to showcase student artwork.

Classical Concert: Festival of New American Music Presents

California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) and the Crocker present virtuoso flutist Laurel Zucker and Grammy-winning harpist Jacquelyn Venter in this Festival of New American Music performance. Both nationally recognized, Zucker and Venter will present an emotionally-charged performance that should not be missed. $6 Museum members, $10 students/youth, $12 nonmembers. This month, Art Mix transforms into a welcoming bro-asis for the gentlemen of Sacramento. Enjoy men’s etiquette and fashion tips from the Denim Spot and advice on outfitting your man cave from local designers. Get buzzed while watching live barber demonstrations by Anthony’s Barber Shop and rock out to live music by The Nickel Slots. Join in on five-minute spotlight art talks featuring the manliest men in the Crocker’s collection and don’t miss guest DJ Billy Lane, beard and mustache contests, and manly maker stations. Ladies, it wouldn’t be a party without you so please join us! Free for Museum members, $10 nonmembers. College students get a $2 discount on tickets. Drink specials under $5 all night. Carmen Ramos, the exhibition’s curator, will discuss the complex relationship between Latino art and the larger world of American art from the 1950s to the present. Wonder Lab

This drop-in art-making program, open to all, is designed to spark creativity! Children with learning and developmental disabilities, ages 5 and older, and their families are especially invited. Wonder Lab is presented in collaboration with I Can Do That! and the Crocker Art Museum’s Art Access Committee. This session is offered as part of the Crocker’s participation in the 2014-15 UC Davis Campus Community Book Project (CCBP), which features “Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism” by acclaimed researcher, inventor, and best-selling author, Temple Grandin. Kids & Company Gallery Adventure

Artful Tot

Every month, toddlers explore art making with different materials in new ways, from printmaking and color mixing to clay and fabric. The Art of Parenting: Family Traditions in a Multicultural America

This program invites parents and grandparents to come together and exchange ideas about passing down family tradition – or creating new ones – in ways that reflect the diversity of today’s families. This event is inspired by the blended cultural traditions presented in the exhibition “Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art.” Participate in a parenting discussion, sample international treats, and try a hands-on craft. Bringing family photos is encouraged. Advance registration is recommended. Homeschool Day: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

All aboard! November’s Homeschool Day, for grades pre-k through 12, is all about travel. After a fun, interactive journey through the galleries looking at planes, trains, and other fantastic ways of getting around, students ages 4 and older will receive guidance from an art instructor for creating their own map-inspired artwork. One chaperone is required for every five students. $3 per person in advance (advance registration is required by 5 p.m., November 10), $5 at the door. Fee includes Museum admission. Sunday Crafternoon

This monthly gathering will inspire your family’s creativity and help you enjoy quality time together. Make simple crafts that celebrate the season, using a variety of beautiful materials. Baby Loves Art

Baby Loves Art engages babies (up to 18 months old) in a visually stimulating gallery walk and gives parents and caregivers a fun opportunity to connect with their babies and each other. Sketch It

Visitors ages 5 and older can sketch at their own pace while receiving drawing instruction. This drop-in program meets in a different gallery each month.
