Sacramento is a great art town.
The Crocker Art Museum was a major draw even before a 2010 expansion more than tripled their exhibit space. Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk has been growing for more than 20 years. And don’t forget about the great Art Program at Sacramento State University.
The Sacramento Public Library has decided to get in on the act and will be touching base with all three of these Sacramento arts institutions. The Library will host an art class presented by the Crocker, a Community Art Day on the afternoon of Second Saturday, and a lecture about the Sacramento region’s place in art history with a Sacramento State Art Professor.
All events take place at the Central Library at 828 I St. in downtown Sacramento.
Saturday, August 10, Community Art Day
In the Galleria Main Hall, 1 to 3 p.m.
This is the main event for Art in August—and a great place to start your Second Saturday. See art exhibits throughout the library. Watch interactive art demonstrations in the Galleria. Try your hand artistic techniques. We’ll have experts on hand to show you how to do Chinese calligraphy, iris paper folding, quilling and more.
Sunday, August 11 and 18, Learn to SEE, Learn to DRAW
2 to 4 p.m.
Have you always wanted to learn how to draw—or draw “better”? Using various techniques and concepts, students of all levels will see that drawing is a skill to be learned, not an innate gift given to a few. Join us in the East Meeting Room of the Library Galleria. Registration is required. Please bring a sketchbook or paper, soft charcoal pencil such as a 4B or 6B, and a kneaded eraser. Tuesday, August 13, “Glory Days: The Sacramento Region Art World in the 1960s and 1970s,”

Please join us at the Central Library for a lecture by Elaine O’Brien, PhD., professor of art history at Sacramento State University. O’Brien will look back at the outstanding art produced in this region during that turbulent era when Northern California was at the forefront of peace and social justice movements that rocked the nation and the world.
