February 4 - March 31: Allensworth Exhibit: 100 Years of the California Dream Opens at the Capitol. The Centennial Celebration of Allensworth, one of the first towns founded, financed and governed by African Americans, will kick off with the unveiling of a historic exhibit that will be on display in the State Capitol Museum rooms in Sacramento. from February 4 – March 31, 2008.  A reception will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. in the basement of the Capitol on February 6. The 11-panel exhibit, “Allensworth: 100 Years of the California Dream,” was commissioned by the California African American Museum (CAAM). Historian, Susan Anderson is the curator. The exhibit is co-sponsored by California State Parks, CAAM, the California Community Empowerment Foundation and the California Legislative Black Caucus. February 28: EDD's Celebration of History in Black Health, Education, and Information Fair. Taking place on Mon-2/28 in EDD's Cafeteria, 800 Capital Mall in Sacramento from 10 am to 1 pm. Everyone is invited. For more info all Patty Call at (916) 654-8089. This fair is being held to celebrate and educate individuals about Black History Month. Black History Month was established in 1976 by Afro-Americans for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. Black History Month is a remembrance of important people and events in African American history and is celebrated annually in February. The month-long celebration was an expansion of Negro History Week, which was established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, Director of what was then known as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Woodson selected the week in February that embraced the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Presented by the California Employment Development Department.
