The Kuumba Collective Art Gallery strives to present the best works by African American artists who bring the joy of art to the diverse community of Sacramento and beyond. Open Thursdays - Saturdays noon to 6 pmand the second Saturday every month. The Kuumba Collective is a consortium of African American artists in Greater Sacramento Region. Marshall Bailey spearheaded the effort in 2008 to combine the talents of several black artists at various venues throughout north and downtown Sacramento. They called themselves the "The Kuumba Collective" (Kuumba is a Swahili word meaning "creativity"). Some of the mainstay artists during that time were Daphne Burgess, Frank Blackwell, Iris Dimond, Joyce Carley, Shonna McDaniels, Warren Sperling, Delgreta Brown and Shikiri. There are numerous artist studios in the building including Framing by Frankie Edwards, Healing Tarot-inspired paintings by Penelope Clement, clay sculpture by Miguel Paz, Fuzed Glass Creations by John Witherspoon and others.
