Stipend Position for College Age Youth at CARES-Center for AIDS Research, Education & Services
Description of Position: CARES is looking for 3 youth, age 18-24, from the African American, Latino, and Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Trans (GLBT) communities. The youth will become peer educators leading teams of diverse youth to provide HIV/STD education, prevention, and testing to 1000 Sacramento Area youth ages 12-24 during the 2009-2010 school year and summer 2010. Student leadership experience and interest in community service, social work, and public health is a plus. Enjoy a flexible work schedule, including weekend and evening shifts, $10/hour, 10 hours a week.
Community service project for high school students. CARES is looking for 5 youth, age 14-18, from the African American, Latino, and Gay/Lesbian/ Bisexual/Trans (GLBT) communities. The youth will become part of a diverse youth peer educator team providing HIV/STD education, prevention, and testing to 1000 Sacramento Area youth ages 12-24 during the 2009-2010 school year and summer 2010. Student leadership experience and interest in community service, social work, and public health is a plus. This position fulfills most area school community service project requirements. This is a volunteer position 10 hours a week, after school, evening and weekend availability. Addressing HIV, STDs, and Testing at an Early Age: CARES believes that empowering youth to educate each other about HIV prevention and testing is the best way to stop new HIV infections among Sacramento’s youth. It is often the risky behaviors that young people engage in during their high school and college years that set them up for subsequent sexual health problems. Youth often face barriers to HIV testing, such as lack of resources to pay for testing and the fear of their parents knowing they are getting tested for HIV and STDs. CARES is launching a new youth-focused program in hopes of finding high risk youth by utilizing social networks and viral marketing, including a texting campaign where youth can find free safe sex kits and testing in their area. We believe that empowering youth by youth to protect themselves and get tested on a routine basis will give Sacramento a sexually healthy and responsible network of youth that will spread education and prevention instead of HIV and STDs.
