Description

The Sacramento National Association for Advancement of Color People (NAACP) Branch will be hosting a Free "Know Your Rights" seminar at the Oak Park United Methodist Church, where Pastor Robert Jones is Senior Pastor, located at 3600 Broadway (in Oak Park) from 10am - 2pm on Saturday, September 27, 2008.  Your support and attendance is requested this Saturday.  Lunch will be provided--please RSVP.  Call (916) 447-8629. Learn about the following: 1) your General Rights and how to Protect your Rights, 2) Redress Claims and Complaints, 3) Bail/OR/Arraignment, Voting Rights and Felonies, 4) Plea Bargaining Myths, 5) Probation, 6) Juvenile Cases, 7) Excessive Force and you have an opportunity to ask the attorneys questions!

This seminar is a direct result of the recent "Racial Profiling" town hall meetings that were held throughout the city.   "As I participated in the pre- and post- racial profiling meetings, it became clear to me that our community truly needs to be educated on their rights if ever approached by law enforcement.  Not only should the police officers have more training, but we need training as well," says Betty Williams, President of Sacramento NAACP Branch.

The Sacramento NAACP Branch on an average handles 25 police issues per month.  In almost every case--if individuals were clear on their rights during their encounter with law enforcement--their situations probably would not have escalated to a higher level.  That is why the Sacramento NAACP Branch is encouraging everyone--mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, teachers, counselor, pastors, families and young people--to come out to this free seminar and become educated on their rights, including their right to vote in the state of California.  Many people do not realize that in this state, ex-felons can vote, as long as they have satisfied all criteria of their parole.

Betty Williams states she is excited to have the Wiley W. Manuel Association of Sacramento County ( a group of African American Attorneys) help with facilitating the seminar, creating the curriculum, and implementing this program.  "These attorneys have been practicing law for many years and when they teach this seminar, they are teaching from experience."

If you would like more information on the "Know Your Rights" seminar, please contact the Sacramento NAACP office at (916) 447-8629.  Youth and Adults are encouraged to attend!
