HUB PREVIEW: The Soweto Gospel Choir To Perform Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert In Modesto October 10

By Michael P Coleman

The Grammy Award-winning, world-renowned Soweto Gospel Choir is coming to Modesto on October 10, performing a concert in honor of the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth.

The acclaimed ensemble has just released their latest album, Freedom.  Among the album’s highlights is a luminous version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and a Holy Ghost-inspired medley that includes “Jesus On The Main Line,” “This Joy That I Have,” and “When The Saints Go Marching In.”

Since the group’s 2002 debut, the Soweto Gospel Choir has shared stages and recording studios around the world with legendary artists including Kirk Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Alicia Keys, BeBe Winans, and Bono.  The word “heavenly” has been used to describe them, but somehow, it doesn’t quite do them justice.

Choral music has a long, rich tradition in the Black community, and that tradition was born on the African continent.  It’s a history that is in very good hands with the Soweto Gospel Choir.  Don’t miss them in Modesto October 10.
