With its recent announcement of dolls emulating civil rights activist Rosa Parks, space pioneer Sally Ride and late rock icon David Bowie, Mattel seems to be a on a roll with keeping the brand front and center in a good way.

But the iconic toy manufacturer may have hit a snag among fans with news of its new Dia de los Muertos Barbie going on sale Sept. 12 at major digital retailers.

The doll, which the company said honors the 3,000-year-old Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead holiday, is sparking backlash of cultural misappropriation.
