"SITUATIONS
101"--the
book is written in a non-intimidating manner, drawing
the reader in. What unfolds next is a telling piece of
work that invokes roiled anger in readers, ignites
controversy, self-reflecting dialogue, and a working
disbelief as well as a quite empathy for those in
denial. The sometimes comical and difficult to digest
book is at times diplomatic, and at others, tackles
responses head on, insisting we ‘get back to the
basics in mastering relationships.

Before a public reception, book signing and
panel on book representation of black women, Stanis was
given a key to the city by Mayor James M. Baker. As word had gotten out that "Thelma from Good
Times" was coming, a meeting was
changed to a reception because "so many people
wanted to meet her," said John Rago, Baker's policy
and communication director.
"She was one of the early icons for
African-Americans on television as she pioneered the
image of a strong, youthful, multi-talented and
beautiful woman," Baker said. "This portrayal
changed the prevailing image of African-American women
on television."
