Combating Advanced Gum Disease.
The effectiveness of fighting advanced gum disease with both oral and topical antibiotics can be seen in an experiment conducted at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in Ann Arbor. There, researchers treated “hopeless teeth” in 90 inner-city patients with advanced gum disease by first cleaning their teeth. The patients were then treated with two to four weeks of oral antibiotics, followed by “as many as three rounds of topic antibiotics” which were impregnated in a cellulose film that you temporarily applied to root surfaces. Previous to treatment, all the patients had been recommended for extensive oral surgery. After treatment, about 67% of the once “hopeless teeth” were saved and 81% of the patients avoided any surgical procedure at all. Those who did require surgery needed less stringent procedures.
We’ll be happy to answer all your dental health related questions. Unfortunately, periodontal related problems are often discovered after they have persisted for an extended period of time. Proper oral hygiene, daily dental care and regular dental checkups will minimize the risk of gum disease. Brushing and flossing are vital in keeping teeth free from plaque-generating bacteria. Join us in Laguna West Plaza, across from Apple Computer, and enjoy the experienced professional and expert dental care can accomplish. We invite you to call us to schedule an appointment.
