Historical Racism and the Impact on Health Disparities

Join CBHN as we host an important discussion featuring Courtney Walker, Pharm.D., R.Ph, Researcher and Medical Account Director at Novo Nordisk. This Health Equity Forum discussion will center on the origins of medical distrust, health disparities, and the black community.
Many Black Americans do not trust their healthcare providers to act in their best interests and research has shown that Blacks are much less likely to report trust in their physicians and hospitals and consequently are less likely to seek treatment or be compliant with recommended treatment plans. All too often, when Blacks have the same diseases as their White counterparts, unfortunately they are much more likely died sooner. Trust is not only a foundational element to the doctor-patient relationship but also is a vital factor in an individual’s decision making to seek-help to prevent on manage their disease.
In order to mitigate health disparities, we must address the root cause of the issue and cause of distrust of the healthcare system. This session will be a robust discussion and exploration of the historical roots of medical distrust and what actions can be taken to begin to dismantle the structural and institutional causes of health disparities.
