Reminder: Key Dates for Enrolling in Health Care Coverage

With all of the information about enrollment in health care coverage, it can be confusing to know what steps you need to take, when and how. The following information can help you better understand the enrollment timeline and the actions you need to take to get covered.

KEY DATES/DETAILS TO REMEMBER

January 15 – For private health coverage through Covered California beginning January 1, 2014, your health insurance company must receive your payment by January 15. For payment help, visit https://www.coveredca.com/getting-covered/how-to-pay.html

March 31 – Last day of open enrollment for private insurance through Covered California

October 1 – Open enrollment begins for private insurance through Covered California and individual plans

Medi-Cal enrollment is open year round.

“Special Enrollment”

There are certain events that will allow you to enroll in a Covered California or individual plan outside of the open enrollment timeframe. These events include:

  • Loss of a job
  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Birth of a child

Remember to have the following items on hand to apply:

  • Latest income tax return or projected annual income
  • Eligibility is based on household size and total annual income, except under certain circumstances
  • Proof of legal U.S. residence or citizenship. *This is only required if you are applying for yourself. If you are applying for your children or others, you do not need to provide
  • Information on health care options from your employer
  • Make sure that you get help from the right people. Only trained and certified Covered California Service Center representatives and Covered California Enrollment Counselors, Insurance Agents, Plan-Based Enrollers, and County Eligibility Workers will be able to help you enroll in an insurance plan.
