Mayor Johnson Address Business Leaders and Health Professionals

Greetings!

SACRAMENTO MAYOR KEVIN JOHNSON
TO ADDRESS BLACK CHAMBER AND HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS DURING AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP WEEKEND
Friday, March 30 – Noon Doubletree Hotel

SACRAMENTO, CA-Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson presides over the 2012 African American Leadership Weekend (AALW) as the mid-day luncheon keynote speaker on Friday, March 30 at the Doubletree Hotel. The California Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation (CBCCF) and the California Black Health Network (CBHN) host this three-day gala affair March 29 -31.
Mayor Johnson will address statewide African American business owners about the “Indivisible” project. He will provide details of the community action program to change and take greater
responsibility for growth and sustainability. He will also discuss
the benefits and challenges of implementing President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).
When the president signed the law in 2010 Johnson said, “I think this is an historic moment and something we as Americans should be proud of. There are 200,000 people in our community that were previously uninsured will now be insured. I think this is monumental.”
Peter V. Lee, the Executive Director of the newly-formed California Health Benefits Exchange joins the AALW to provide detailed background and information about the structure of the Exchange and how it works.
The Exchange was established by the State of California to support the dramatic expansion of coverage enabled by the ACA. Before joining the Exchange, Lee was the Deputy Director for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Washington, D.C.
The business community continues to question the effects of ACA on their enterprise. The internet journal, Political Correctness reports:
The Affordable Care Act Provides Tax Credits For Small Employers To Use To Purchase Health Insurance For Workers.
–Tax Credits Work On a Sliding Scale Up To 50 Percent of Employer’s Cost In 2014
–More Than 4 Million Small Businesses Are Eligible To Receive Tax Credits
–Businesses With Up To 100 Workers Can Purchase Insurance Through the State-Based Health Insurance Exchanges
–In Addition to Full-Time Workers, Part-Time Employees Benefit From Small Business Tax Credits. For example, two half-time workers count as one full-time worker for the purpose of calculating tax credit eligibility. This means that part-time workers, who are more likely to be uninsured than their full-time counterparts, may finally be able to obtain job-based health insurance with the help of
the small business tax credits.
The African American Leadership Weekend (March 29-31) provides workshops and professional networking opportunities to share critical Health and Wellness policy and transparency. Members of the California Legislative Black Caucus and prominent doctors, healthcare professionals and small business owners converge to determine the direct effects of this reform. AALW also addresses general social, political, workforce and educational issues within the
African American community.
Other guest speakers include:
Dr. Robert K. Ross, President and CEO, The California Endowment, Ellen Wu, Executive Director, CPEHN, Dr. David Carlisle, President, Charles Drew Medical
University, Dr. Melissa Brown, CEO Pathworks, Dr. Carol Lee Tobert, CEO Tolbert and
Associates, Tara Lynn Gray President and CEO Yardari Enterprises and many more.
