All 49 African heads of state invited by President Biden have confirmed attendance to the U.S.

All 49 African heads of state invited by President Joseph R. Biden Jr. have confirmed attendance to the U.S. Africa Leaders’ Summit taking place in Washington D.C. December 13-15, the White House told Today News Africa on Wednesday night.

A White House National Security spokesperson told Today News Africa that all 50 invitees, 49 African heads of state and the chairperson of the African Union, have confirmed attendance to the summit.

“I can also relay that we’ve confirmed participation of all 50 invitees (49 countries and the AU),” the official said in an email.

One key African leader who will not be in Washington will be the embattled Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. did not invite him to the important summit. Rather, the invitation was extended to the country’s ceremonial President, Sahle-Work Zewde. And that is our top story today.
