Sacramento — Join us Sunday, November 3, 2013 from 2:00PM – 5:00 PM for an Artist Reception and Art Talk with Photographer Larry Dalton “The Man Behind The Lens”.

Armed with cell phones and tablets, a lot of people fancy themselves amateur photographers, but no matter how “smart” it is, a camera phone is no match for the eye of a seasoned professional.

Area photographer Larry Dalton brings 30 years of work into focus with a new exhibit coming to 1001 Del Paso Boulevard, formerly known as the Kuumba Collective Art Gallery, in November.

“The Man Behind The Lens” runs Sunday November 3 through Saturday, November 30. The show kicks off on November 3 with an Artist Reception and Art Talk from 2:00-5:00 p.m.

As a photojournalist, Dalton has taken thousands upon thousands of photos for two local publications, the Sacramento Observer and the Sacramento News & Review. Dalton joined the staff of the Sacramento Observer, which highlights the city’s African American community, in 1986.

A historian of sorts, Dalton has captured key moments in Black life, locally and throughout the region. He recalls fondly traveling with other staffers to Oakland to see anti-apartheid champion Nelson Mandela after his 1990 release from a South African prison, after serving 27 years for opposing White-rule in his native country.

“It was amazing,” Dalton says. “It was a big moment.”

Not all the moments he’s captured with his camera are “big” in the international sense, but many still resonate with Dalton. The Bay Area native shot for the Sacramento News & Review as a regular staff photographer from 1997-2007, when he became a freelancer. There, he recalls witnessing the brain surgery of a local baby and being welcomed into a heroine “shooting gallery.” The images he captured for others to see are still very much with him.

Dalton, a graduate of the Glen Fishback School of Photography, also shoots weddings, family portraits, family reunions and events for government and corporate clients.

All these experiences and more will be reflected in “The Man Behind The Lens.” The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery, as the name signifies, is located at 1001 Del Paso Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95815. The show will run Tuesday-Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
