Short stories and poems are being sought for “Our Black Mothers: Brave, Bold and Beautiful!” — an upcoming anthology honoring mothers and mother figures of African descent.

Both young and adult children are invited to submit stories about the powerful Black women in their lives to bring them the recognition they deserve as matriarchs. Write about your mother, grandmother, godmother, aunt, sister, family friend — anyone who may have served as a mother figure.

Stories must be touching and truthful. Biographies about your mother or mother figure are acceptable. Up to three stories can be submitted per person, and stories should be between 350 to 1,500 words in length. Please include a 150 words or less author bio with your story.

Poems are also accepted, although stories are preferred.

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2013. Submit stories to joslyngaines@comcast.net with “Black Mother’s Project” in the subject line and the story cut and pasted into the body of the email (do not send attachments). Or mail your story to Black Mother Project, 4506 Lippi Parkway, Sacramento, CA 95823.
