African-Americans make up a mere 3 percent of the student body at Cal State Long Beach. Of the estimated 36,000 students who attend the university, only 1,200 are black, Donald J. Para, CSULB’s interim president, told worshippers Sunday at Antioch Church of Long Beach.

That’s a statistic that the university has sought to change in recent years by participating in California State University’s Super Sunday initiative in which representatives from the university system discuss the importance of higher education at predominantly black churches across California.
