California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new stay-at-home order affects five regions with less than 15% availability at intensive care units. The new COVID restrictions last for three weeks then are assessed weekly going forward as the state tries to slow the spread of surging coronavirus cases.

The order bans private gatherings and closes businesses except for “critical infrastructure and retail.”

The Greater Sacramento region is the latest to fall under California’s regional stay-at-home order, effective 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10. The order is already in effect for the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California regions. Several counties in the Bay Area voluntarily joined the rules in an effort to keep area hospitals from becoming overwhelmed amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in California.
