Chase Bank turned away an Illinois man who recently tried to deposit his compensation check after being wrongly convicted and spending 23 years in jail for a crime he did not commit.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Darryl Fulton recently tried to deposit a check of $169,876 from the state of Illinois but was turned away from Chase Bank twice.

“I’m just trying to deposit my check,” Fulton said. “I just wanted to be treated like anyone else.”

His lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, is now questioning whether racism was behind the incident.
