I’ve had some awesome lunches and dinners, and incredible desserts, in my 49 years.  Both my belly and my blood pressure are testaments to that, causing me to limit the indulging in recent years.

However, what’s the California State Fair without a treat like a corn dog, or a dessert like…oh, I don’t know…funnel cake.

A vendor at this year’s fair has managed to combine the two into one delicious gift to fairgoers:  a deep fried Twinkie dog.

Perfection.

Like many of the best fair concoctions (lobster fries? chocolate bacon?), you have to suspend previous thoughts about both foods and just dive in.  Once you do, you’ll see the water’s fine.  You can find the booth near the Administration Building, at the entrance to the food court.

While you’re there, check out the deep fried Reeses.  The chocolate and peanut butter are just melty enough to blow your mind.  My eldest daughter, Janet, asked me what the batter was made of.  My reply?  “Who cares?”   I may never eat an un-fried Reeses again.

Deep fried Twinkie Dogs and Reeses are available through Sunday, July 27 at the California State Fair, at Cal Expo in Sacramento.
