If the British Academy Britannia Awards are any indication, the show will not simply go on in Hollywood.

The Britannias, an awards show put on by the Brits each October to celebrate creative achievements in La-la-land, aim to be an early taste of what the 2018 awards season will look like. And this year, if anyone thinks the glamour of red carpet season will wash away Hollywood sins currently dominating the headlines, think again.

It’s why none of the acceptance speeches or toasts, including Kevin Spacey’s tongue-in-cheek introduction of the charming, 91-year-old Dick Van Dyke, resonated until director Ava DuVernay took the stage.  

DuVernay came armed with a dose of reality.
