When Lenny Kravitz dropped out of playing the leading role in the long-anticipated Marvin Gaye biopic “Sexual Healing” in 2013, it was not clear why he would give up such an iconic role. Now, in an exclusive interview on Howard Stern’s radio show, he’s finally explaining the reason behind the choice.

In the interview, the “American Woman” singer notes issues with the production that led him to “respectfully bow out.”

“First of all I had to play Marvin Gaye as an actor. That takes preparation. I had to record the music and produce the music as Marvin Gaye, which is not the same as doing it for myself so I needed a certain amount of time,” he explained of the process. “They were in a rush because of business and funding and backers and time limits and I just felt like ‘you know what? It’s too rushed.’”

Adding to the pressure, the family was against the story line that reportedly focused on Gaye’s time in Europe during the 1980’s as he suffered alcohol addiction while entangled with problems relating to unpaid taxes.
