On the nation’s biggest performance stage Sunday, a captioning mistake outraged many viewers just prior to Arlington native and country star Mickey Guyton’s stirring rendition of the national anthem.
Before kickoff, Jhené Aiko, a soul singer-songwriter performed “America the Beautiful.” NBC cameras panned to Guyton, who was looking on, and the graphic identified her as Aiko for a few seconds. The camera eventually found Aiko but not before fans of each called out NBC for its error.
Both singers are women of color.
