Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden offended a lot of African Americans yesterday during a radio interview with Charlamagne tha God when he questioned the “blackness” of anyone who was still deciding about whether to vote for him in lieu of the orange alternative.
“If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or for Trump, then you ain’t black,” Biden, off the cuff (and clearly off script) said toward the end of the interview.
Later in the day, after a swift and brutal Black Twitter barrage, Biden backed off of those comments and ultimately offered an apology.
“I shouldn’t have been such a wise guy. I shouldn’t have been so cavalier,” Obama’s former Vice President said during a call with the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce. “No one, no one should have to vote for any party based on their race or religion or background.”
Now, I have this to say about this little dust up.
Biden was right. If you’re still figuring out whether you’re for Biden or Trump, I join Biden in questioning just how black you are. Uncle Joe spoke the truth.
But as a white man, and an old white man at that, he assumed he had the right to say something like that, as he spoke extemporaneously, when in fact he doesn’t.
THAT is what black people got ass hurt about. And I say that we’ve got more important things to get upset about.
