Before he was a Grammy Award-winning musician, John Legend was an Ivy League student at Penn — and it still didn’t stop him from being profiled by police.

That’s why Legend — along with a score of other musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys — sang Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The entertainers assembled to promote racial equality and reconciliation as part of A&E Networks’ and iHeartMedia’s Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America. The event, which was spurred by the Emanuel AME church shooting in Charleston, S.C., and is a precursor to a series of roundtables on race, airs Friday (8 p.m. ET/PT) on six A&E networks, including History, A&E and Lifetime. At 10, a special features footage from the musicians’ panel discussions in Baltimore; Ferguson, Mo.; Chicago and Charleston, the sites of racial unrest.
