After having originated the role of Nabulungi in the blockbuster musical “The Book of Mormon”, Nikki M. James plays the French gamine Éponine in the Broadway revival of “Les Misérables,” but the Tony Award winner may as well be playing a superhero.

” ‘Les Mis’ is like the ‘Star Wars’ of Broadway. Our fans, they could have a convention,” Ms. James says. “There are people at the stage door who say things like ‘we flew here from Japan and we are seeing the show five times this week and then flying back to Japan.’ I’m a big theater fan and I would never do that.”

Ms. James talked with the Wall Street Journal about the pressure of playing Éponine, nontraditional casting and owning “On My Own.”
