One year ago today, a single envelope changed the course of Oscars history. At the 2017 Academy Awards, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced that La La Land had won best picture—which was not exactly a surprising outcome. The film’s producers swarmed the stage and, one by one, started delivering excited acceptance speeches.
