Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist and actor Common has a prominent role on the screen these days.

Not only does he play civil rights activist James Bevel in “Selma,” but this week he also made his premiere as the host of “Framework,” the first-ever furniture design competition series airing on Spike TV.

This 10-episode series pits emerging furniture designers against each other to compete for $100,000 in cash and the chance to launch their lines nationally.

We sat down with Common this week to discuss what inspires him about home furniture design and his unlikely transition from films and music into the world of reality television.
