Will Smith’s Oscar Win Has Been Jaded

Depending upon how you want to slice it, you were either one of the lucky millions of Academy Awards viewers who watched soon-to-be Oscar-winning actor Will Smith assault comedian Chris Rock on live television last night, or you were one of the unlucky ones who got to see a celebrated African American actor play into every negative stereotype that’s still held and cherished by mainstream society.
I was both.
I was appalled by Smith’s actions, on a number of fronts. First of all, Rock’s a comedian, and the best of comedy is a little edgy. Was his joke, referencing Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith bald head, in poor taste? Perhaps. But the record needs to be corrected on one front, at least.
