The City of Sacramento has appointed Dr. Nicole Clavo as the manager of its Office of Violence Prevention, effective Aug. 24.
Clavo will serve as the City’s lead on gang prevention and intervention and will coordinate a comprehensive effort to address youth and gang violence with the City’s community partners. She will assume her office as Sacramento continues to contend with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a related rise in gang violence.
“Nicole has earned a reputation as a trust builder, collaborator and effective communicator with strong follow through,” said City Manager Howard Chan. “I believe she is the ideal candidate for this position, and we are eager to benefit from her experience and expertise.”
Clavo joins the City of Sacramento from her current role as an employee/labor-relations negotiator with the California Peace Officers Association. She also is the founder of the non-profit Healing Five Foundation.
As a negotiator with the CPOA, Clavo worked on behalf of California correctional officers and the California prison system. As the founder of Healing Five, she acts as a resource navigator and support system for victims and survivors of unexpected tragedy, with a goal to prevent and mitigate the impact of violence while promoting resiliency.
“The City’s Office of Violence Prevention plays a critical role in keeping our kids and communities safe, stable and secure,” Clavo said. “I am incredibly excited to begin my work in this position and to serve the people of Sacramento.”
Clavo holds a doctorate in psychology, a master’s in human services and is a proud Navy veteran. She also is the mother of Jaulon “J.J.” Clavo, the Grant Union High School student-athlete who was murdered in 2015 before a football game.
