The final weekend of the California State Fair & Food Festival will feature an Esports tournament on Saturday, July 27 at the Republic of Gamers Stage at Cal Expo…but this time with a twist! The tournament is dedicated to competition amongst some of California’s most competitive collegiate Esports teams, including San Jose State, U.C. Berkeley, U.C. Davis, Sacramento State, University of San Francisco, and Academy of Art University.

“The California State Fair is happy to foster the great legacy and tradition of healthy, collegiate rivalries,” said Cal Expo General Manager and CEO Rick Pickering. “The educational component of this event will provide value to our younger fairgoers who want to learn about collegiate level esports competition.”

Participants will compete in a single-elimination tournament of the popular multiplayer video game Overwatch. Teams will be able to field six players to compete for the prestigious California State Fair Bear Cup and bragging rights as inaugural champions. Elite high school team Rocklin High has been invited to the tournament to meet members of the collegiate Esports teams, participate in the tournament, and discuss curriculum and careers in gaming.

“I’m just hoping the teams that are defeated will respawn and join us again at next year’s CA State Fair,” joked Pickering.

Multiple college teams will host booths at the CA State Fair to provide more information and insights about collegiate Esports to fairgoers who are intrigued by the growing industry. The collegiate tournament will help close out activities on what has been an exciting and innovative California State Fair & Food Festival. Spectators can enjoy live coverage of the Bear Cup on the official California State Fair Twitch account.
