Sacramento, Calif. October 12, 2020 – The Crocker Art Museum plans to open to visitors on Friday, October 16, with member preview days on October 14 and 15. The Museum has been closed since March 17.
“We are eager to open and allow our community to regain their access to the art and relationships found inside the Museum. The safety of our staff and visitors remains our greatest concern, and we are exercising caution through new health protocols and visitor limits,” said Lial A. Jones, the Museum’s Mort and Marcy Friedman Director & CEO. “I believe now more than ever that art has an enduring ability to bring comfort, respite, joy, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.”
The 150,000-square-foot Crocker will be open four days a week, Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every third Sunday of the month – including October 18, the Sunday of opening weekend – is Pay What You Wish Sunday, sponsored by Western Health Advantage.
“ We can’t wait to welcome visitors back to experience new exhibitions and our permanent collection, which spans five continents and more than 4,000 years of human creativity,” Jones said. “This will be a time for Sacramentans to reconnect with their favorite artworks and Crocker friends. So many people have reached out during the time of closure to express how much they miss being at the Museum, and we are eager to see them back in the galleries.”
The Museum has developed comprehensive safety procedures for its staff and visitors, following guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), State of California, and Sacramento County. Measures include limiting the number of visitors to 25 percent of the Museum’s maximum capacity, implementing advance ticket reservations, enhancing cleaning procedures, and requiring visitors and staff to wear face coverings. Visitors can download the Museum’s map in advance of visiting, as printed materials will be limited. When the Museum opens, three new exhibitions will be unveiled: Wayne Thiebaud 100: Painting, Prints, and Drawings, a retrospective celebrating the 100th birthday of Sacramento’s most famous and enduring artist; Todd Schorr: Atomic Cocktail, a visual extravaganza of Pop Surrealism “imagery derived from old comic books, early cartoon animation, horror and sci-fi movies, hot rod culture, and psychedelic poster art,” according to the artist himself; and Al Farrow: The White House a single sculpture meant to jolt us out of complacency, no matter which side of the political divide we stand upon.
The Museum will continue robust virtual offerings on its website and social media channels; and new in-person programs, events, and activities will return as COVID-19 wanes. A continually updated schedule of programs and events is available on the Museum’s website.
Upon reopening, Museum hours will be Thursday – Sunday, 10 AM – 5 PM, and visitor entry will be by timed ticket. Tickets are available here.
