Community engagement and advocacy have been integral to the work of planners for the last half century. Over time, we’ve developed and deployed “tried and true” processes and methods, many of which of have been proven ineffective as our society has become more complex and our technology has evolved.

As we enter a new decade with a pandemic-level bang and in the wake of increasing social and economic disruption, we’re forced to reckon with the flaws in community engagement and rebuild our foundation to ensure it is conducted in a more inclusive manner.

What have we learned over the last decade, or the last several months? What do we hope to leave behind? What do we want to create to move us into the future?
