There’s no question about it, summer trips look different this year. Flying is out of the question for many, cities in Florida and California are closing businesses for a second time, and nearly 20 states have entry restrictions for those coming from out-of-state. But that doesn’t mean we need to stay shuttered in at home—it just means that getting away requires a little more thoughtfulness than summers past.

In the conversations swirling in family text threads and on group Zooms, the biggest hurdle in planning seems to be simply getting started. With former summer trips canceled and refunded, starting fresh and navigating pandemic-era challenges means we’re all desperate for a little destination inspiration—and seeing where others are headed gives a glimpse into what’s possible.

To help you plan a summer trip that feels safe for you and your family, we asked our editors and contributors throughout the country what trips they’re taking this year. Some have already returned from road trips they swear by; others, having logged hours of research, share the vacations they’re looking forward to. Our hope is that some of the destinations might end up on your travel plans, but it’s also okay if they act simply as thought starters—making it easy for you to imagine a similar trip somewhere closer to you, that fits squarely within your comfort zone. Read on for where we’re headed.
