Meet Civil Rights Activist and Journalist, Charlie Cobb. Taking place on Thurs-2/26 from 3-4:30 pm. From The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to Barack Obama. In celebration of Black History Month, please join us on the campus of California State University, Sacramento (inside the CSUS Multicultural Center, University Library) this Thursday, as we welcome award-winning journalist and civil rights veteran, Mr. Charlie Cobb.
Cobb will be in Sacramento to discuss the modern (1939-68) civil rights movement, grassroots organizing versus mass protest in public spaces led by charismatic figures, and lessons found in the civil rights movement that are relevant to the time we live in now. He will be both thought provoking and inspirational in his talk entitled: From the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to Barack Obama. Please take part in this event as Cobb takes us through first-person accounts through the civil rights struggle. Cobb is a former organizer and field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and knows firsthand about the struggle for civil rights. Risking his life to register black voters in the Deep South, Cobb helped to establish the Freedom Schools. These schools helped expand the educational opportunities of young black southerners. Cobb went on to become a renowned national news reporter and lecturer in addition to writing for National Geographic. Cobb is the author of several books, including On the Road to Freedom, which he will also be discussing. On Saturday, Feb. 28, Cobb will be at Underground Books, 2814 35th St, from 2 to 4 to talk about his book, On the Road to Freedom, A Guided Tour of the Civil Rights Trail. This event is free and open to the public, and Cobb will be available for book signings. See more about Cobb at www.pri.org/pri-highlights/charles-cobb.html to see what a fascinating and knowledgeable storyteller/historian/activist he is.
