Inspired by the words and action of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., We Shall Overcome showcases African American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches.  This production ties together gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway and spirituals.  From Aretha Franklin to Wynton Marsalis; Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder; Nina Simone to Donny Hathaway, and more, producer and star Damien Sneed’s unique understanding of each genre allows him to fluidly cover so much musical ground in a single performance.

Ticket holders are invited to attend a 1:30 – 2:30 pm pre-show panel discussion featuring African American business and community leaders, as well as a post-show reception catered by Mama Weber’s Southern Kitchen and BBQ of Manteca.  Both events are free. Panelists include: Brenda Arnold, Regional Vice President Robert Half International; Wendy Byrd, President Modesto/Stanislaus NAACP; Dr. Daryl F. Camp, Superintendent Riverbank Unified School District; Darryl B. Curry, Chief Operating Officer Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Service Area; Sergeant Felton Payne, Modesto Police Department; Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chief Operating Officer Fitzpatrick Dealership Group; Liz Garmon, Sankofa Theatre Company; Alonzo J. Gradford, Attorney; Herbert Whitehurst, Jr., Former Professional Athlete, German Football League.
