Watching the 2010 Soul Train Music Awards—LOVED IT!!!

So this past Sunday (11/28), my early evening began with me, my mom and my oldest daughter preparing to watch BET/Centric’s 2010 Soul Train Music Awards as I so absolutely LOVE these awards shows. It’s so fun to see what people are wearing, who will perform, and the surprise performances.
At 4 pm, BET presented the history of Soul Train-Hippest Trip of
Don Cornelius, and the first black music variety show on television, debuted on October 2, 1971 (wow, I was only 4 years old at that time) to become one of the longest running syndicated TV shows of all time. It was May 10, 1993 when Don Cornelius signed off a 20-year era. Shamar Moore became the new host for the next 13 years. Soul Train became the longest running syndication in T.V. history…running 35 years. Is this info in the SCHOOL HISTORY BOOKS…it should be!!!
So many owed their careers to Soul Train as it inspired generations of performers. It was mentioned that white bands (i.e. – David Bowie) were requesting to perform on Soul Train as it was the lifestyle that everyone wanted to be a part of.
The pre-show began at 5 pm with the walk on the purple carpet. I wasn’t really feeling the purple carpet but I guess it fit as the show was in
My mom and I weren’t too thrilled about the correspondent host, June Ambrose and totally did not like her dress. I could have seen La La as being the host as she is so bubbly and energetic. I would have really liked to see Free side by side with AJ who was also a host interviewing celebrity stars on the Purple Carpet. The colors for the evening of dress attire definitely seem to be black and champagne.
Celebrity stars looking good on the Purple Carpet:
- Rozonda “Chilli” looked so pretty and was on the arm date of a sexy-fine looking gentleman who was “DOA-Decadent on Arrival”
- Anita Baker looked great with her handsome sons
- Jazmine Sullivan had a beautiful hair do and dress was beautiful as well
- …had not seen Eric Benet for awhile and he was there with his beautiful wife Manuela
- Keshia Knight-Pulliam looked gorgeous and shapely in a pretty green dress.

Let the show begin with R. Kelly opening the Soul Train Music Awards with “Bump and Grind”. I totally loved his tuxedo suit look and great touch with the red handkerchief…now that’s how you dress for the ladies…looking good R. Kelly. His entire performance was so charismatic with an outstanding mix of a Grease Broadway scene and reminding us of a Frankie Lymon moment. You can always count on R. Kelly to take us to another level of entertainment.
Other great performances during the show included:
- Ne Yo with kind of a burlesque presentation
- Loved the Legend tribute award to Anita Baker by Chrisette Michelle, Tamia (she was so beautiful…hand clap to Tamia-YOU GO!), Faith Evans, Lala Hathaway, Dionne Farris, Faith Evans, Rachelle Ferrell, Goapele, and El DeBarge …all of whom incredibly carried out their individual renditions of Baker’s songs as they all sang beautifully with live band!!! Eric Benet DID GOOD…where you been! Outstanding!!!
- The Ms. Erykah Badu did her thang with such magnificent and always an unusual style.
- And, you so have to watch yourself to see the CNN’s Wolf Blitzer as he did the “Dougie”…it was so funny and a great scene (shoot Blitzer was gigging)!!!
- Cee-lo Green’s performance with the
- Tribute performance to Ron Isley done by Keyshia Cole, Bilal, Tank, Jeffrey Osborne, Eric Benet, El Debarge, Freddie Jackson, and Peabo Bryson who lit up the stage and got the crowd dancing. Mr. Isley soon was brought onto the stage by Steve Harvey, he then performed “Between the sheets”, later, he was joined by R. Kelly for “Contagious.” It was an outstanding performance. Me, mom, and my daughter liked to drop dead with Ron pointed to the crowd and announced his baby boy of 3 years old was in the audience. We were like WOW!!! YEP, 69-year-old Ron Isley has a bombshell of a wife…Kandy Isley.

Definitely watch the 2010 Soul Train Music Awards and you will enjoy it…it will come on BET a zillion times so you will have so many opportunities to watch it!
