The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is hosting “The Ladies Auxiliary and Ladies in White: Pioneering Female Firefighters in Citrus Heights” book signing event this Wednesday, May 8, at Station 23 in Citrus Heights.
The History and Arts Commission has published a book based on the historical contributions of a local WWII era all-female volunteer fire fighting brigade, which eventually evolved into one of the nation’s first and most effective volunteer first aid programs. The books combines historical information the City has collected over the years, including oral history interviews and photographs.
The Ladies Auxillary were known to extinguish grass, barn and farm fires and even sustained injuries while protecting their community during World War II. And after the war, the group helped pioneer the concept of medical response teams working in conjunction with the local fire departments and provided an organizational model that other communities soon followed.
The book signing event will feature authors Teena Stern and Alice Fellos, and will take place at 3pm on Wednesday, May 8, at Station 23, 6421 Greenback Lane, in Citrus Heights.
