Abbott Elementary Star Was Told He’d Never Work Again After Everybody Hates Chris

Abbott Elementary star Tyler James Williams claims he wasn’t expected to land a part on the hit mockumentary, or any show for that matter, after his breakout run on Everybody Hates Chris.

In a sitdown with GQ, Williams, who rose to fame playing the teenage version of comedian Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris, reveals the role defined him to the point a producer on the sitcom couldn’t see him playing anything else. Additionally, Williams said he realized being a young actor in Hollywood left him being typecast, as many pre-teens and teenagers who struggle to find work as adults find out. “I figured that out pretty fucking quickly,” Williams says. He remembers the time an Everybody Hates Chris producer told him, “I’ll never see you as anything else and you’ll probably never work again.” “I was like, ‘Holy shit, you really just looked at me and said that,'” he said. Though Williams believes the producer was likely joking, he internalized the comment for a while.
