No shoes, no Spanx, but for Gayle King, working out of her New York apartment amid a coronavirus pandemic presents a bit of a problem. Sure, she has a 28-step “commute” to her family room, where she co-hosts “CBS This Morning” – 26 if she’s “speeding” – but she misses being with people.

“What I know about myself is – I don’t like working from home,” she tells USA TODAY. “I like the camaraderie.

“Listen, I’ve always known that I was a people person, so that’s no surprise to me,” she adds, “but there’s just something amount the interaction…and so I can’t wait for us all to get back together. For me, it’s a much more enjoyable experience.”

Her recent return to radio offers King a chance to connect amid social distancing. The morning show co-anchor, who also serves as editor-at-large of O, The Oprah Magazine, is hosting “Gayle King in the House,” a six-week call-in show that debuted on SiriusXM April 23 (Thursdays, 5 EDT/2 PDT) spurred by COVID-19 that lets listeners express their thoughts and feelings. (She hosted “The Gayle King Show” for SiriusXM’s Oprah Radio from 2006-2011.)

King is “having a blast” from a program that’s “driven by the callers. I like anything that allows me (to) interact with people because I still love people, and I could talk to anybody about anything,” she says. She’s “very open” to the idea of continuing after the six shows are completed on May 28.

King starts with a COVID-19 related subject and then shifts to something topical, and says she likes to finish with “something that makes you smile… I don’t want to end on a Debbie Downer note because I think certainly during this time, we all need a reason to feel good.”
