SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.— For the eighth consecutive year,Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) has been named as one of the top utilities in the U.S. for diversity by DiversityInc, one of the nation’s leading publications on diversity and business. This year, PG&E ranked fifth.
“Diversity and inclusion is part of the fabric of PG&E’s culture. We serve some of the nation’s most diverse communities. Our strong support and engagement in these core values help us to work together with all of our communities to build a better California,” said PG&E Vice President of Talent Management and Chief Diversity Officer Laura Butler.
DiversityInc’s annual survey – tracking the nation’s top companies in terms of hiring, retaining and promoting women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBT and veterans – is a rigorous, data-driven survey, gauging detailed demographics and management practices at some of the largest American employers.
Companies with more than 1,000 U.S.-based employees are eligible to enter and there’s no cost to compete. Each company’s rank is based on an objective analysis of 183 separate factors, based on data from a 300-question survey.
Companies are evaluated within the context of their own industries. Their performance is assessed equally in four key areas of diversity management:
- ·Talent Pipeline: workforce breakdown, recruitment, diameter of existing talent and structures.
- ·Equitable Talent Development: employee resource groups, mentoring, philanthropy, movement and fairness.
- ·CEO/Leadership Commitment: accountability for results, personal communications and visibility.
- ·Supplier Diversity: spend with companies owned by people from underrepresented groups, accountability and support.
PG&E’s leadership strongly supports the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion – from an inclusive board of directors with a diverse representation, to diversity and inclusion training for the leadership team. In addition, the company has a history of grassroots Employee Resource Groups (ERG) that goes back more than four decades.
For the last 13 years, PG&E has been named as one of the best places to work by the Human Rights Campaign, the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBT Americans. In fact, PG&E’s PrideNetwork ERG is one of the oldest in the nation and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. And PG&E scored a perfect 100 on the inaugural Disability Equality Index, which measures companies on their disability inclusion policies and practices.
The utility also has one of the nation’s top diverse supply chains. In 2015, PG&E spent a record $2.5 billion with diverse suppliers. For the last four years, diverse suppliers have accounted for more than $2 billion of PG&E’s spend and more than 40 percent of the utility’s spend for the third consecutive year.
PG&E’s Supply Chain Responsibility program has received recognition from national organizations. Among the recent honors:
- In early April, PG&E was named the Utility of the Year by the Western Region Minority Supplier Development Council.
- In March, PG&E was named one of America’s top corporations for women’s business enterprises by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).
- Last September, PG&E was named to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) “Million Dollar Club” for the second straight year after spending $77 million with Hispanic-owned businesses in 2014.
PG&E’s Supply Chain Responsibility website contains more information about the program. The site also provides details on how to become a certified diverse supplier.
