Serena Williams isn’t wary of talking about money.

The tennis legend has been open about pursuing financial opportunities outside tennis, recognizing that an athlete’s career on the court can’t last forever. She responded honestly in 2015 to the revelation that, despite her much higher rank, she earned less through endorsements than Maria Sharapova did. 

Now she’s urging others to challenge the taboo around talking about finances, through a new Allstate Foundation Purple Purse campaign to raise awareness about financial abuse ― which is rarely discussed but happens in up to 99 percent of domestic violence situations, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
