Background The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival has picked up this unfinished work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from Alaska to Arkansas, the Bronx to the border, people are coming together to confront the interlocking evils of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism. The Poor People’s Campaign understands that as a nation the U.S. is at a critical juncture – that it needs a movement that will shift the moral narrative, impact policies and elections at every level of government, and build lasting power for poor and impacted people.

Background – For seven years, the California Homeless Union, with thousands of unhoused members in over 15 cities and small towns, has been organizing to resist these attacks-in the camps, in the courts, and in the consciousness of the public. Our fight is for actual housing, against forced internment in congregant shelters, locked-down, government-controlled “safe ground” and criminalization of the homeless. The National Union of the Homeless was re-established in 2019 with founding members from the original Union which once had 35,000 members. Since the re-establishment of the National Union of the Homeless Thousands of poor and unhoused are organizing at the forefront for housing now, Stop the sweeps, homeless not helpless, nothing about us without us, and no more death on our streets.
