For the first time in the history of the California State Fair, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán will perform on Sunday, July 22 on the Golden 1 Stage. While concerts are free at the Fair, you can buy reserved seats now!
Founded in 1897, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán is recognized as the oldest and most famous mariachi group. Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán will fill the stage with the intense, powerful blast of the trumpet and the smooth, melodic strings of the violin, guitar, guitarrón – a six-string acoustic bass and vihuela – a five or six string Mexican guitar.
Linda Ronstadt sang with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán in 1986. It was the first time she publicly sang in Spanish and it sparked an appeal for mariachi music in non-Hispanic communities. The current 13 member ensemble of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán continues to preserve the tradition of Mexican folk music while appealing to modern audiences.
