This year’s Sacramento County Fair’s “Farm Garden in a Wheelbarrow” program gives students in Sacramento County public, private, and homeschool classrooms a cost-free opportunity to compete for prizes by planting, maintaining, and harvesting their own garden.

As of February 20, students and teachers can get all the supplies they need — including soil, a wheelbarrow, seeds, and even class curriculum materials to grow a winning exhibit — from the Sacramento County Fair Office.

Using the materials provided by the County Fair, teachers create a hands-on, interdisciplinary experience for the children with a free, low-tech, portable wheelbarrow garden. Classrooms are invited to display their wheelbarrow garden at the Sacramento County Fair to be judged for Best of Show. The top three gardens will be awarded cash prizes given directly to the classroom for further enrichment in the learning place.
