As breast cancer strikes all nationalities, THE HUB spotlights several celebrities who are breast cancer survivors: Diahann Carroll, 74 (diagnosed 1998 at 63), Robin Roberts, 49 (diagnosed 2007 at 46), and Rene Syler, 46 (underwent a bilateral mastectomy in 2006 to prevent breast cancer).  We would also like to recognize Faith Fancher (diagnosed 1997) who was a top reporter at KTVU-Channel 2 in Oakland, California, where she remained until her death in 2003.

Most of us have been impacted by breast cancer. Maybe a close relative has had it. Maybe someone you know battled it and lost. Maybe you have had it or you are facing it right now. Here is a “Prayer for Women With Breast Cancer,” from Beliefnet.com.

“Father, for the strength you have given me I thank you. For the health you have blessed me with, I thank you. For the women who are going through breast cancer and their families I ask you to strengthen and to heal as you see fit. Lord we know you want us to be in good health and to prosper. Lord use us to do the work you have for us to do. For we know time is getting short on this earth. Lord be with every woman who is sick and encourage them as only you can. I know how faithful you are. You have shown yourself to be everything you say you are in your Holy Word. I praise you for you made this body and you can heal this body. In Jesus Name I pray. “

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and according to BlackDoctor.org “African-American females experience higher death rates from breast cancer than any other racial or ethnic group.” This is partially due to African-American women tending to have more aggressive tumors. The fact is not meant to scare you, but it is meant as a wake up call.

Educate yourself and women you know on risk factors, discover ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer, learn how to give yourself a breast exam, and help to fight breast cancer. And remember, if you are over 40 years of age, it is important to schedule an annual mammogram.
