Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle unleash their wit on Will Smith
Two successful black American stand-up comedians performing in the UK together before an arena crowd (in Liverpool), trailing notoriety and raising anticipation: Chris Rock plus Dave Chappelle – two stars for the price of one, and a force to be reckoned with in terms of freedom of speech. This would be a night like no other, we were told in the pre-show warm-ups.
In the event, this rare alignment of comic talent was much as expected – two superlative sets, the twist being that it was Chappelle who looked a little bit like the bigger star, and he who broached in detail the infamous slapping incident at this year’s Oscars that turned Will Smith into a quasi-pariah and Rock into one of the ceremony’s most talked-about hosts of all time.
