Hail To The Victors, And To My Older Brother

Forgive me for this column, especially if you’re not a college football fan or a former or current resident of Columbus, Ohio. This proud University of Michigan alumnus is still on a high from last Saturday’s Ohio State game.

Well, to call it a “game” is being fairly generous to the Buckeyes. After a first quarter that made my blood pressure rise ever so slightly, the Wolverines showed up, showed out. And won the game 45-23, in Columbus no less. I’d have given anything to be at the Big House in Ann Arbor as the final seconds of the game ticked down and I started my celebratory drinking.

As I sobered up Monday morning (it was a GREAT weekend!), I began to reflect on just when I became such a Michigan football nut. I remember loving the Wolverines as I toiled for 17 years on staff at the University of Michigan. But I remember that my football connection began much earlier. That started back when I was in the 8th grade, during the fall that my older brother, Charles, enrolled at U-M’s College of Engineering.

My brother and I were never tight growing up. As I was five years younger, I was mainly a nuisance to him when we were young. He gave me a thrashing when I was just six years old because a girl he had a crush on told me, during our walk home from grade school, that I was “cute,” in front of him.

I was cute! Why hate on her, just for telling the truth and shaming the devil?
